Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club
Attendance: 40 members were in attendance.

Apologies: (6) Joe Alcorn, Jim Donaghy, Eric Fulton, John Ludlow, Ian Murray and John Tan.

The President, Des Moore, welcomed members to the meeting. He then introduced this morning’s speaker Victor Fails the topic of his talk and presentation being “The Institute of Advanced Motorists.”Victor has stepped into the breach at very short notice.

The I.A.M. was set up in 1956 in an effort to reduce road casualties and improve the standard of driving. There are several local branches and Victor is linked to the Limavady branch where he acts as branch secretary. Victor passed the advanced I.A.M. test when he was twenty and he is anxious to encourage young drivers whose group sadly are involved in a high rate of accidents. He would encourage all drivers, including the elderly, to concentrate at all times and be acutely aware of the surrounding conditions. The motto should always be “Funnel vision not Tunnel vision”.

Victor’s presentation advised on many aspects of driving including how to cope in heavy rain or snow, overtaking maneuvers, cold weather and low sun conditions, the fog code and the two second rule. (four seconds in severe conditions.) Always look well ahead and be aware of road and lane direction signs, especially at roundabouts. In severe weather conditions always plan to carry an ice scraper, blanket, shovel, de-icer, torch, fully charged mobile phone, food, vacuum flask with a hot drink and a full tank of fuel.

For useful tips and information, see the website (for more info 'Click' here). I.A.M. driving assessments can be taken for a fee of £45:00.

A summary of this talk is available in the speaker’s record book and here on the club website. A vote of thanks, proposed by Derek Woods, was passed to Victor by the President. The members showed their appreciation of an interesting and timely talk.
