The President, Mike Turner, welcomed members to the meeting. He was delighted to introduced this morning’s speaker Claire Sugden MLA, the topic of her talk being “Life at Stormont”.

Clare, currently a MLA for the Constituency of East Londonderry, outlined her progress in political life. After obtaining a degree in politics from QUB. She worked for six years as a Parliamentary Assistant to local MLA David McClarty who she describes as her mentor. After David's untimely death in 2014 Clare was co-opted as MLA for the constituency and was afterwards elected to Stormont in her own right. Out of respect for her mentor she remains an Independent Unionist. Clare gave a honest and evocative outline of her experience and challenges as a Justice Minister at Stormont.

A lively question and answer session followed the talk. A summary of the talk is available in the speaker’s record book and here on the club website.
A vote of thanks, proposed by Des Moore, was passed to Claire by the President. The members showed their appreciation of an excellent and timely talk.
