Minutes for 9th January 2018
Attendance: 39 members were in attendance.
Apologies: John Graham, Cecil Leitch and John Ludlow. (3)
The President, Mike Turner, welcomed members to the meeting together with guest Robin Blackwood. He then introduced this morning’s speaker, Club Member Des Johnston the topic of his talk being “East Africa.”
In 1969 Des and his wife Irene flew from London to Kampala airport under the auspices of the ‘Overseas Development Corporation’ (Teachers overseas) to take up a teaching post in a school of Muslim origin employing teachers from many nations. Des painted an amazing picture of contrasting lifestyles in East Africa. From the white sands and reef of the East coast to the wild animals of the Ngorongoro Crater game reserve in Tanzania.
East Africa is an expansive country of superlatives including Lake Victoria, the 2,000 mile long Rift Valley, the White Nile, the Murchison Falls and inactive volcanoes. Des and Irene took the opportunity to explore the natural delights and customs of the area using their trusty Fiat to travel the dirt roads and tracks. In 1971 a coup brought Edi Amin to power in Uganda. This resulted in financial difficulties and the targeting of the Asian community. The writing was on the wall and it was the time for the Johnston family to return to the U.K.
A summary of the talk is available in the speaker’s record book and here on the club website.
The President on behalf of the members, thanked Des for his outstanding presentation. The members showed their appreciation of an interesting and informative talk.
The President said this was a sad time for the Club with the death of John Dobson on the 10th December 2017. John was a popular long time member of the Club and for many years looked after the press coverage and photos for the local newspapers. His sense of humour was legendary and he supplied many of the ‘Raise a Smile’ items on the Gallery Plus Web page. John will be sadly missed by the entire Probus Club membership.
