Minutes for 5th September 2017

Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club
Attendance: 34 members were in attendance.

The President welcomed members and guest Robin Blackford to the meeting. Congratulations were extended to Robert and Evelyn Campbell who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on 7th August.

Apologies: Joe Alcorn, James Dinsmore, Noel Finlay, Jim Gordon, John Graham, Norman Irwin, Danny Kennedy, John McGlade, John McKegney, Ian Murray, Billy Platt, Ernest Preece and John Tan. (13)

The President was delighted to introduced this morning’s speaker Judith Lavery from the PSNI the topic of her talk being “Email and other Scams”.

Judith’s comprehensive talk gave detailed information on the multitude of email and other scams perpetuated in the Causeway Coast and Glens district. She described prevalent and sophisticated means used to target victims. At present 13 Crime Prevention Officers investigate the scams, 99% of which originate abroad, thus increasing the difficulty in obtaining successful prosecutions. Only 5% of scams are reported. Judith would encourage everyone to report suspected scams to the police on the 101 police line. To reinforce the protection outlined in Judith’s talk each member received a copy of the Little Book of Big Scams.
A question and answer session followed the talk. A summary of the talk is available in the speaker’s record book and here on the club website.
A vote of thanks, proposed by Des Johnston, was passed to Judith by the President. The members showed their appreciation of an excellent and timely talk.
